Nonplused, they answered that taking a baby home seemed like the thing to do."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21999805.post-83943211068574426772009-02-28T14:54:00.000-06:002009-02-28T14:54:00.000-06:00Pity too the Down's Syndrome son of Arthur Mil...Pity too the Down's Syndrome son of Arthur Miller, Daniel, who was wiped out of his father's life.

http://www.vanityfair.com/fame/features/2007/09/miller200709?printable=true&currentPage=allAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21999805.post-64951872542396827822009-02-28T13:54:00.000-06:002009-02-28T13:54:00.000-06:00I am reminded of "On My First Son," Ben Jonson's e...I am reminded of "On My First Son," Ben Jonson's elegy to his son who died at the age of seven. As Jonson powerfully presents it, there is something enviable and sorrowful about being a child. So much hope and promise awaits, but that future also includes much suffering and sorrow. I assign this poem to students in my literature classes, but I know that they cannot fully comprehend the passion and sorrow embodied in the poem. The students are too close to being children themselves, and the fullest appreciation of childhood only comes to adults who take time to observe and remember -- and, as you have noted, read about children in literature.
In any event, I must tell you that I am pleased to have discovered your blog to which I will regularly return for your refreshing commentary and the suggestions about books offered by you and your readers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21999805.post-68243536690760095192009-02-28T10:16:00.000-06:002009-02-28T10:16:00.000-06:00As one of the childless, I'm not sure I'm fully au...As one of the childless, I'm not sure I'm fully authorized to weigh in . . . but to your list I'd add Rebecca West's The Fountain Overflows (and, just to be evil, any number of Ivy Compton-Burnett novels).Levi Stahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094919454842047688noreply@blogger.com
